Symbolic March
In 1943, the ship that was carrying the Canadian infantry land transports was torpedoed en route to Sicily. Therefore the Canadians had to travel largely on foot. It was imperative that the land force move inland as quickly as possible to prevent enemy forces from having the time to set up additional defenses. They set a grueling pace under the scorching Sicilian sun.
A small group of walkers will follow in the footsteps of the 1st Canadian Division, retracing the route on foot, as closely as can be ascertained. Anyone can join the march for a week, a day or even an hour. For those who cannot participate, we are proud to march in their place.
